Kasilo County Member of Parliament, Hon. Peter Paul Emaju, has tasked the government with improving healthcare services in Serere District by constructing a ward and mortuary at Apapai Health Centre. Hon. Emaju made the appeal this afternoon during a parliamentary plenary session chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, as MPs discussed the President’s State of the Nation Address.
Hon. Emaju noted that although the President had emphasized strengthening the health sector and improving access to healthcare, there was still a need to address critical gaps in health infrastructure.
He revealed that during a visit to Apapai Health Centre last week, he found patients staying outside the facility due to the lack of adequate ward space. He therefore urged the government to prioritize the construction of a ward and mortuary to improve healthcare delivery and ensure patients receive treatment in dignified environment.
The legislator also called on the government to expand road infrastructure in Serere District. He commended the Infrastructure Committee for pushing for the tarmacking of the Kumi–Ngora–Serere Road, but urged the government to also consider the Serere–Soroti Road for upgrading.
In addition, Hon. Emaju called for government support to provide youth with income-generating projects, particularly following government interventions that have restricted fishing activities on lakes where many young people in Serere have depended on fishing for their livelihoods.
He urged the government to provide alternative livelihood opportunities to affected youth to enable them to earn a sustainable income and improve their living standards.
